Inside the Banished War Machine: Clans, Workshops, and Mercenaries
The Banished are not a conventional state military with one standardized chain of command. Their war machine is a network of clans, warbands, mercenary groups, workshops, ship crews, raiding forces, and commanders bound together by loyalty to Atriox and the opportunities his organization provides. This episode examines how that decentralized structure produces both flexibility and brutality. Banished engineers rebuild captured vehicles and weapons into heavier, more aggressive designs, while individual leaders field forces reflecting their own traditions and specialties. Mercenaries and former Covenant soldiers can retain distinct identities as long as they deliver results. Jiralhanae pack loyalty remains important, but Sangheili swordsmanship, Kig-Yar commerce, Unggoy labor, and specialist expertise all contribute to the same military economy. The Banished can therefore absorb defeated enemies rather than simply destroy them. Their workshops symbolize the organization itself: take what exists, strip away whatever is unnecessary, reinforce what works, and send it back into battle under new ownership.
