Operation TORPEDO: Beta Company at Pegasi Delta

Beta Company inherited Alpha Company’s mission profile and eventually faced its own nearly impossible objective during Operation TORPEDO. The target on Pegasi Delta was a heavily defended Covenant refinery whose destruction could severely disrupt enemy production. This episode examines the Spartan-III assault, the difficult approach across exposed terrain, and the massed Covenant defenses that turned the mission into one of the program’s most devastating battles. Beta Company reached the target and destroyed it, accomplishing the operation at catastrophic cost. Tom-B292 and Lucy-B091 were among the very few Spartans who survived the fighting, carrying the psychological consequences long after the strategic success had been recorded. TORPEDO demonstrates the contradiction at the heart of the Spartan-III concept. These soldiers were capable of accomplishing missions conventional forces could not, but that capability encouraged commanders to keep assigning objectives where enormous casualties were considered acceptable. Humanity bought time and destroyed valuable Covenant infrastructure with the lives of children trained to make the exchange possible.
