The Banished: From Atriox’s Rebellion to a Galactic Power

The Banished began with Atriox refusing to die for the Covenant and grew into a military power capable of challenging nearly every faction that survived it. This episode traces the organization from Atriox’s rebellion against his Covenant masters to its campaigns across former imperial territory, the Ark, and Zeta Halo. Unlike the Covenant, the Banished did not require members to believe in the Great Journey or accept one sacred hierarchy. Loyalty could be earned through strength, opportunity, profit, protection, or shared hatred of former masters. That flexibility allowed Atriox to recruit Jiralhanae, Sangheili, Kig-Yar, Unggoy, humans in limited circumstances, and other specialists useful to his campaigns. The Banished combined captured Covenant technology with aggressive redesign, independent clans, powerful war chiefs, and a culture that rewarded battlefield effectiveness. They became dangerous not because they inherited the Covenant intact, but because they stripped away many of the religious restrictions that had made the old empire predictable.
