The Jiralhanae: Packs, Chieftains, and the Road to the Banished

The Jiralhanae entered the Covenant as a powerful but politically subordinate warrior species and emerged from its collapse as the foundation of one of the galaxy’s most dangerous new military powers. This episode examines Jiralhanae society through packs, clans, chieftains, personal loyalty, and the violent competition that shaped life on Doisac. Their physical strength made them formidable infantry and shock troops, while Covenant leaders increasingly used them as a counterweight to the Sangheili. The elevation of the Jiralhanae during the Great Schism placed warriors such as Tartarus at the center of the Prophets’ final attempt to preserve control. Yet Covenant service did not define every Jiralhanae future. Atriox rejected suicidal obedience, gathered followers around competence and shared profit, and created the Banished. The road from Covenant pack structures to Banished clans shows a species adapting old traditions to new political realities while refusing to remain another empire’s expendable soldiers.
