The Lekgolo: Worm Colonies, Hunters, and Living Machines

A single Lekgolo is a relatively small worm-like organism. Thousands working together can become one of the most powerful soldiers in the Halo universe. This episode examines the remarkable colonial biology that allows Lekgolo to combine into larger gestalts, including the heavily armored Mgalekgolo pairs humans know as Hunters. These colonies can coordinate as unified intelligences, operate specialized armor, and even integrate themselves into machinery and enormous Covenant war platforms. Hunters are therefore not simply large infantrymen. Each armored body contains a living collective whose strength, resilience, and coordination come from many organisms functioning as one. Lekgolo service within the Covenant was also unusual because their relationship with the empire differed from that of many conquered species, giving them a degree of independence and respect earned through destructive capability. Their existence challenges ordinary definitions of soldier, individual, and machine. On a Halo battlefield, an enemy that appears to be one warrior may actually be an entire colony fighting as a single mind. Visit ImaginedBattlefield.com for more military and science fiction.
