The Precursors: The Species Before the Forerunners
Long before the Forerunners considered themselves masters of the galaxy, the Precursors possessed technology and knowledge so advanced that later civilizations struggled even to describe it. This episode examines the beings credited with shaping life across the Milky Way, creating extraordinary neurophysical structures, and developing the philosophy later remembered as the Mantle of Responsibility. Rather than ruling through conventional fleets and borders, the Precursors appear to have viewed life itself as part of a vast, interconnected process. Their relationship with the Forerunners eventually became catastrophic when the Precursors judged them unworthy of inheriting the Mantle and apparently favored humanity instead. The Forerunners responded not with political protest, but with near-genocide against their own creators. That ancient rebellion became the first link in a chain leading to the Flood, the Forerunner-Flood War, and ultimately the Halo Array. Understanding Halo’s oldest history begins with the civilization the Forerunners tried to erase from it. Visit ImaginedBattlefield.com for more military and science fiction.
