The Swords of Sanghelios: The Arbiter Builds a New Order
The Swords of Sanghelios emerged from the collapse of the Covenant as Thel ’Vadam attempted to build something the Sangheili had rarely possessed: a political order not defined by service to the Prophets. This episode examines the Arbiter’s coalition of keeps, warriors, fleets, and reformers seeking to stabilize Sanghelios while confronting traditionalists who rejected his alliance with humanity and his rejection of the Great Journey. The Swords inherited experienced soldiers and warships but also inherited a society fractured by decades of imperial service and sudden religious collapse. Their struggle was therefore both military and political. They fought rival factions during the Blooding Years, defended Sangheili independence, and eventually battled Jul ’Mdama’s forces in the campaign culminating at Sunaion. The Arbiter’s challenge was greater than winning battles. He had to persuade a warrior culture that survival required institutions, diplomacy, and a new definition of honor after the empire that had organized Sangheili life for thousands of years disappeared.
