Fighting the Flood: Containment, Quarantine, and Last Resorts

The Flood makes conventional military doctrine dangerously inadequate because every dead or captured soldier can become part of the enemy force. This episode examines the special logic of fighting a parasite whose first objective is not territory but biomass and intelligence. Containment begins with identifying outbreaks quickly, sealing movement routes, establishing quarantine zones, and preventing infected ships from leaving the area. Firepower must destroy bodies thoroughly enough that they cannot simply return as combat forms. Commanders also have to protect navigation data, artificial intelligences, and spacecraft from an enemy capable of learning through infection. Once an outbreak grows beyond local control, the acceptable scale of force changes rapidly. Sangheili ships bombard contaminated territory at Voi, Alpha Halo is destroyed, and the Forerunners ultimately construct the Halo Array because ordinary containment fails on a galactic scale. Fighting the Flood means understanding that retreat can be more dangerous than death if the escaping unit carries the parasite somewhere new.
