First Contact at Harvest

Humanity’s first contact with the Covenant began on the agricultural colony of Harvest and transformed a colonial security crisis into a war for species survival. This episode examines the encounters that brought Staff Sergeant Avery Johnson and local forces into conflict with Kig-Yar raiders and eventually exposed the existence of the wider Covenant. What initially resembled piracy became something far more dangerous when the Covenant cruiser Rapid Conversion arrived and its commanders interpreted human presence through religious doctrine. Harvest also contained a truth the San’Shyuum leadership could not safely reveal: Forerunner systems identified humans in a way that threatened the Covenant’s entire theology. The future Prophets of Truth, Mercy, and Regret responded by concealing that discovery and turning humanity into an enemy whose extermination could preserve their political order. First contact therefore failed not because communication was impossible, but because understanding the truth would have threatened the leaders controlling the encounter. Harvest became the battlefield where diplomacy was deliberately replaced by holy war. Visit ImaginedBattlefield.com for more military and science fiction.
