Space Is the High Ground: Why Orbital Control Decides Worlds
Ground armies may capture cities and destroy enemy formations, but the force controlling orbit usually determines whether those victories can last. This episode examines why space functions as the ultimate high ground in Halo warfare. A fleet in orbit can land reinforcements, evacuate troops, intercept transports, attack surface targets, protect logistics, and prevent the enemy from moving freely between worlds. When the Covenant gains uncontested orbital control, human defenders face the possibility of plasma bombardment or glassing regardless of how well they fought on the surface. Reach demonstrates the relationship clearly: Army units and Spartans can win local battles, but once the orbital defense network and UNSC fleet collapse, the planet cannot be held. Conversely, powerful ground defenses matter because they can protect the generators, sensors, and weapons supporting the orbital fight. Halo warfare is therefore rarely divided cleanly between land and space. The campaign above determines what remains possible below.
