The Great Schism: How the Covenant Destroyed Itself
The Great Schism destroys the Covenant because its leaders turn an old rivalry into a civil war at the moment the empire is closest to victory. After the death of the Prophet of Regret in 2552, the High Prophet of Truth removes the Sangheili from their privileged military position and elevates the Jiralhanae in their place. This episode examines the political calculation behind that decision, the assassination of Sangheili councilors, and the violence that spreads through High Charity, fleets, colonies, and sacred installations. The Sangheili discover that the Prophets have lied about Halo and that loyalty will not protect them from extermination. The Arbiter and allied forces then join humanity against Truth, Tartarus, and the remaining loyalists. The Schism does not instantly create peace between former enemies, but it breaks the command structure, shared religion, and military cooperation holding the Covenant together. Humanity survives partly because the empire chooses to destroy itself before it can finish the war. Visit ImaginedBattlefield.com for more military and science fiction.
